The organizing committee of Spitzen Leichtathletik Luzern has set the date for the 39th edition of the event. Following recent positive political developments regarding the track renovation, the organizers are confident that World Athletics will once again grant a special certification.
Most recently, the future of Spitzen Leichtathletik Luzern was uncertain due to the aging track. In recent years, the meeting was only able to take place thanks to a special certification issued by World Athletics. However, following increased media attention and political pressure, the outlook for the event has now become more positive. As the owner of the track, the City of Lucerne defined the concrete planning for the track renovation in August 2025. The City Council is expected to decide on the necessary funding in sum-mer 2026, with construction scheduled to begin after the meeting’s anniversary in 2027. With the renovation plans now becoming more concrete, Spitzen Leichtathletik Luzern has set the date for 2026: the 39th edition of the meeting will take place on Thursday, July 16, 2026. “We are confident that World Athletics will once again issue a special certification based on the clear construction plan,” says Karl Vogler, president of the Lucerne meeting.
Young Talent Award Presented
Spitzen Leichtathletik Luzern is the third-largest athletics meeting in Switzerland. Every year, numerous na-tional and international stars take part. However, the Lucerne meeting also offers young Swiss athletes the opportunity to gain experience in front of a large audience. To further promote young talent, the meeting or-ganizers, together with the donor‘s association “1500er Club,” presented a Young Talent Award for the first time in 2025. The first recipient is Leon Krummenacher. The athlete from Kerns in the canton of Obwalden achieved third place at the U20 European Championships in Finland in 2025. With his record score of 7,972 points, he ranks second on the all-time Swiss U20 best list.
